The Importance of Being Earnest, 1986 BBC TV production Director: Stuart Burge Cast: Rupert Frazer, Gemma Jones, Alec McCowen, Paul McGann, Natalie Ogle, Joan Plowright, Amanda Redman This is a pleasant, well acted performance, that one might enjoy watching from time to time. I know I do. My first choice remains the 1952 movie. And the 2002 movie is more interesting visually. Advantages of buying this 1986 BBC production are that it is reasonably priced and that it comes with BBC performances of An Ideal Husband, Lady Windermere's Fan, and The Picture of Dorian Gray. The performance of An Ideal Husband is especially worthwhile in that it features Jeremy Brett as Lord Goring and Susan Hampshire as Miss Chiltern. I cannot imagine better casting for those two roles.
